pendulum. Prolific British scientist Robert Boyle—of whom it has been said, “the monotonous acres of his work are occa- sionally relieved by a colorful expression”—is said to have coined the word pendulum in 1660 from the Latin pendulus, a free-swinging body. But the word had been used before this in England and in 1637 Galileo used the Italian pendolo for the same thing. |
