chivalry; shovelry; the Great Entrencher. The chivalry means a group of knights or gallant gentlemen. The word de- rives ultimately from the Latin word caballus for a horse, knights and gentlemen usually being the only ones who could afford to own horses. It is often forgotten that in the American South up until the Civil War the wealthy ruling class was fre- quently called the chivalry, sometimes in a joking way or sar- castically. In the North Robert E. Lee’s forces were called the shovelry toward the end of the war, because all they seemed to do was dig in deeper. Lee himself was called “The Great En- trencher” by his own troops. |
