词汇 | major league |
词源 | major league. The baseball terms major league and minor league date back to 1882, when the National League was called the major league and the American Association (not today’s American League) was called the minor league. Later these two leagues merged and the unified teams became known as the major leagues, any league below them being called a minor league. Today, of course, the major leagues are composed of the American and National Leagues, each with two divisions. Be- cause the major leagues are the highest level of professional baseball, the term major league has generally come to mean the best of anything. Big league, a synonym, also comes from base- ball, where it was used as early as 1899. |
