词汇 husking bee
词源
husking bee. In a husking bee, the term used in America since at least 1693, neighbors got together to help husk corn. A young man who found an ear of red corn got a kiss from the girl of his choice, a custom originated by the Iroquois Indians, though an Iroquois youth got more than a kiss in the Indian fertility rite. There were also apple bees in the early days of America. The bee in the terms may refer to busy, laboring bees in a hive, but more probably it derives from the Yorkshire dia- lect, where the word bean meant a “day,” similar gatherings having been held on special days in Yorkshire, England. See also bee.
