词汇 hypatia
词源
Hypatia. Hypatia refers to a woman philosopher, often a beau- tiful one. The original Hypatia (d. 415) was an Alexandrian Neo- platonic philosopher, an astronomer, and a mathematician, the daughter of famed mathematician Theon. This philosopher of renowned learning, elegance, and beauty drew great crowds at her lectures and wrote an unknown number of books, none of which survive. According to one story, she remained a virgin even after she married. Another tale claims that a young man propositioned her and the beautiful Hypatia hiked up her dress, telling him, “This symbol of unclean generation is what you are in love with, and not anything beautiful.” Her barbarous murder is said to have been encouraged by archbishop St. Cyril of Alex- andria, a personel enemy of the prefect, who was believed to be Hypatia’s lover. She met her end when a band of fanatic monks and a murderous crowd of infuriated Christians, hating her phi- losophy, “pulled her from her carriage, dragged her into a church, stripped her of her garments, battered her to death with tiles, tore her corpse to pieces, and burned the remains in a savage orgy.” British novelist Charles Kingsley wrote of her life in his historical novel Hypatia, or New Foes with Old Faces (1851).
