词汇 | hyphenated americans |
词源 | hyphenated Americans. Starting as contemptuous slang in the late 19th century, hyphenated American meant any naturalized citizen who regarded himself as both American and of the coun- try from which he came (Irish-American, German-American, etc.). Today, the term is not generally contemptuous and refers to one’s ancestry and to racial and religious groups as well. |
