Standing four feet high and a relative of the ea- gle and hawk, the African secretary bird can kill the most ven- omous snakes with its taloned feet, striking and then jumping back to avoid being bitten. One would think this powerful wild bird of prey would have a less domestic name, but it was appar- ently so named because the erectile tuft of long black feathers hanging from the back of its head and nape seemed to resemble the quill pens that secretaries once used.
