However, the seat belt as we know it in cars was originally called a safety belt, though its design wasn’t very safe. It wasn’t until 1959, when Swedish inventor Nils Bohlin designed a safe device, that safety belt became seat belt. One estimate (New York Times, 9/26/02) calculates that Bohlin’s “seat belt has saved more than one million lives in the last 40 years.” Nils Bohlin died at the age of 82 on September 21, 2002, the same day he was inducted into the Inventor’s Hall of Fame in Akron, Ohio, joining Orville and Wilbur Wright, Eli Whitney, and 168 oth- er great inventors.
