second childhood. When one says somebody is going through his or her second childhood, one echoes the words of the Athenian comic playwright Aristophanes (ca. 448 b.c.–ca. 380 b.c.), who coined the term in his play The Clouds (423). Aristophanes also coined plenty of irons in the fire (The Frogs); I laughed till I cried; and throw fear (caution) to the wind (clouds). |
