词汇 | pidgin language |
词源 | pidgin language. A pidgin language has no native speakers, is a second language, that is, a language developed as a means of communication among speakers of various languages. A creole language, on the other hand, does have native speakers. It is simply defined as a pidgin language that has been passed on to succeeding generations as a native tongue. In the U.S. Gullah is an example, as is, of course, the creolized French language of the descendants of the original settlers of Louisi- ana, which is often called Creole or Cajun. Creole derives from the Portuguese criollo, “native,” while pidgin is probably from the Chinese pronunciation of “business.” See also pidgin english. |
