词汇 mae west
词源
Mae West. This inflatable life jacket was introduced at the beginning of World War II and named for one of the world’s most famous sex symbols because it “bulged in the right places.” Mae West (1893–1980) starred on Broadway until two of her plays, Sex and Pleasure Man were closed by the police in 1928. Migrating to Hollywood, she won fame as “Diamond Lil,” the “Screen’s Bad Girl,” and the “Siren of the Screen.” Her name, Webster’s advises, is also given to a twin-turreted tank, a malfunctioning parachute with a two-lobed appearance, and a bulging sail. When told that her name was included in Webster’s, she said: “I’ve been in Who’s Who and I know what’s what, but this is the first time I’ve made the dictionary.” Among her many famous sayings are “Peel me a grape, Beulah [her maid],” and “Come up and see me sometime.” It is said that Mae West ac- quired the nickname “Baby Vamp” when she was only five and played a vamp at a church social; she repeated the performance in a stage play the same year, perfecting her famous walk at that time. “I do all my best work in bed,” she once replied when a re- porter asked her how she went about writing her memoirs. She claimed to be sexually active well into her 80s and once claimed (not in her 80s) to have made love with one of her paramours for 15 consecutive hours. Several inventors have claimed they invented the Mae West life jacket, but most authorities choose U.S. inventor Alvin Markus (1885–1943), holder of many pat- ents. See the New York Times (May 16, 2005) for an interesting account of the invention.
