ice bear; winter bear. Ice bear is a name that Eskimos give to a monstrous grizzly bear they fear even more than the polar bear. In the course of roaming about the country, these griz- zlies sometimes take a dip in the water and roll in the snow, their fur becoming thickly coated with ice. From time imme- morial the Eskimos have feared this deadly “winter bear,” for the thick ice serves as a shield that breaks arrows shot at it and has been known to stop bullets. |
