词汇 | there-s many a slip twixt between cup and lip |
词源 | there’s many a slip twixt (between) cup and lip. This ancient expression, which means that no plan is sure until it is accom- plished, is supposed to have originated with a slave of the leg- endary Ancaeus, the son of Poseidon. The abused slave told his cruel master that he would not live to drink the wine from his treasured vineyards. Spiting him, Ancaeus took a cup of new wine and prepared to drink it. “There’s many a slip betwixt cup and lip,” the slave quipped and just then another slave entered the room with news that a wild boar was rooting up vines in the vineyard. Putting down his untasted cup, Ancaeus ran out to deal with the wild boar, which proceeded to kill him. |
