The night of the long kiss, as it has been called, dates to 1907. On January 3, the marquise de Morny’s pantomime play Rêve d’Egypte premiered at the Moulin Rouge music hall in Paris with the famous French author and actress Colette starring as a woman reunited with her lover. Colette, scantily clad—almost unclad—played opposite her lesbian lover, the marquise de Morny, who played the male role. It was a realistic performance, especially the long uninhibited kiss between the two women toward the end of the play. Unfortu- nately, the marquise de Morny’s husband and a group of his friends had front-row seats. Their outrage spread to most of the audience and a riot broke out in the theater, with people throwing bottles and glasses at the actors and fighting with each other in the aisles.
