词汇 | the longest night |
词源 | the longest night; the longest day. The longest night is another term for the Holocaust (qv). The longest day was June 6, 1944, D-day, when the Allies landed in France. It is said that Ger- man Field Marshal Erwin Rommel (the Desert Fox) was the first to use the phrase, when he told an aide a few months be- fore the Normandy landing that “the first 24 hours of the inva- sion” would be decisive, sealing Germany’s fate: “For the Al- lies, as well as Germany, it will be the longest day.” Years later, the words would become the title of a famous book and movie. |
