词汇 | lemon |
词源 | lemon. Lemons were probably initially grown in the Middle East, for lemon is first recorded as the Persian and Arabic word limun, which became the Old French limon. Limon passed into English when the French exported the fruit to England, and by the mid-17th century the fruit was being called the lemon there. Lemon, meaning something defective or inferior, derives from the sour taste of a lemon and is apparently an American- ism dating back to the turn of the century, as is lemonade (a drink the British call “lemon squash”). See zest. Slot machines with pictures of lemons may have suggested the term lemon for anything of inferior quality. One lemon on a machine and the slot machine player loses, which would not endear lemons to any player. The slot machine was invented at the end of the 19th century, just a few years before lemon was being used in this sense. |
