词汇 | lena blackburne rubbing mud |
词源 | Lena Blackburne Rubbing Mud. Perhaps the only mud named after a person. Lena “Slats” Blackburne managed the Chicago White Sox in the 1920s and 1930s. He found a Dela- ware River mud close by his New Jersey home that seemed bet- ter than other muds umpires rubbed on baseballs to make new balls less slippery and easier to grip when introduced in a game. His mud was in fact so good that it was packaged commercially as Lena Blackburne Rubbing Mud and eventually became the official mud of the American and National Leagues. |
