Gaullist. A Frenchman practicing right-wing nationalistic politics in France is often called a Gaullist, the term known in France and throughout the world. The word of course honors Charles André Joseph Marie de Gaulle (1890–1970), the tall, imposing first president of France from 1958–69. General de Gaulle, a great patriot who had led the Free French during World War II, did not become active in French politics until he was almost 70. He once remarked while in office, “I myself have become a Gaullist only little by little.”
