词源 | gauss. Known as “the prince of mathematicians,” and possi- bly the greatest mathematical genius of all time, Karl Friedrich Gauss (1777–1855) was a German prodigy who when only 10 discovered independently how to sum up complex arithmetic series. He did much important work in his field before turning 21, including a proof of the fundamental theorem of algebra, but did not confine himself to mathematics. Of his many im- portant contributions in topology, physics, and astronomy—he headed the Gottingen Observatory—one of the most valuable is his founding of the mathematical theory of electricity. Thus the gauss, a unit of intensity of the magnetic field, pays honor to his name. |
