cattle call. Alfred Hitchcock infamously called actors “cattle,” and the term is still used in Hollywood. So is cattle call, first re- corded in 1952, an open casting call or audition of many actors for one part or more parts. A cattle call for models is called a “go-see.” The use of cattle as a derogatory term for people dates back to at least 1673, when it is first recorded in this sense. The theatrical use of the term may have originated with actors who thought they were treated like cattle. |
