词汇 | great communicator |
词源 | Great Communicator. A name in praise of Ronald Wilson Reagan (b. 1911), celebrated for his skills in dealing with peo- ple. The former movies and television star served as U.S. presi- dent from 1981–89. Reagan died in 2004, age 93, the longest lived U.S. president. He did like the title The Great Communica- tor, yet in his speeches he delivered many memorable lines, including his description of the then Soviet Union as the evil empire. Shortly after being shot by assassin John W. Hinckley Jr. in 1981, he told his wife, in spite of great pain, “Honey, I for- got to duck” (really a Jack Dempsey quip on losing the heavy- weight championship), and quipped to surgeons about to oper- ate on him: “Please tell me you’re Republicans [his own party].” In Germany Reagan urged Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev to destroy the Berlin Wall between East and West: “Mr. Gorbach- ev, tear down this wall!” Later, after the Berlin Wall came tum- bling down, a 6,000-pound section of it was sent to Reagan for his presidential library, where it can be seen today. See glasnost; reaganomics; win one for the gipper. |
