Pakistan is probably the only country whose name was constructed as an acronym, its letters standing for the the regions that make up the nation: P for Punjab; A for Afghani border tribes; K for Kashmir; S for Sind; and tan for Balu- chistan. A number of other place names are acronyms. Pawn, Oregon, for example, is composed of the first letters of the names of the men who founded it—Poole, Aberley, Worthing- ton, and Nolen.
