“Battle Hymn of the Republic.” Sung to the tune of “John Brown’s Body” (1856) by William Steffe, this was the favorite marching song of Union troops during the Civil War. The words were written by Julia Ward Howe (see uncle tom) in December 1861 while she visited Union troops in Virginia, its major theme, according to the writer: “The sacredness of hu- man liberty.” See god bless america. |
