词汇 | battle of the aesthetes |
词源 | Battle of the Aesthetes. Irish-born author Ernest Boyd (1887–1946) became an important literary figure after immi- grating to America in 1913. His essay “Aesthete: Model 1924,” which appeared in the first issue of H. L. Mencken’s The Ameri- can Mercury that year, attacked the young idealists of New York’s Greenwich Village and launched what was called the Battle of the Aesthetes. Before it was over, a terrified Boyd suf- fered insulted would-be aesthetes picketing his apartment house, throwing stink bombs through his window, jamming his doorbell with pins, and making obscene phone calls to him in the early hours of the morning. |
