honk. The word honk is imitative in origin, deriving from the sound Canadian geese make k-honk, k-honk—when flying in their large V-shaped groups; the Indians, in fact, called these big birds cohonks, and we call them honkers today. The word was much later applied to the sound of horns on early automo- biles and soon after was being widely used as a verb. |
