Hollywoodese. A term referring to the hyped-up speech of movie people. “Hollywood talks and thinks in superlatives,” Leo Rosten wrote 60 years ago in The Movie Colony. “Movie people do not ‘like’ things; they are ‘mad’ about them. They do not dislike things; they ‘loathe’ or ‘detest’ them. . . . The reveal- ing story is told of two movie producers meeting on the street; ‘How’s your picture doing?’ asked the first. ‘Excellent.’ ‘Only ex- cellent? That’s too bad!’ ” |
