fuck-you lizard; gecko. fuck-you lizard is another desig- nation, decidedly unscientific, for Gekko gecko, the tropical to- kay gecko lizard that G.I.s encountered in Vietnam. The croak- ing of this gecko’s call resembles the English “Fuck you, fuck you,” hence the name, first recorded in 1933. Green troops in Vietnam were sometimes told that the gecko’s call was the ene- my taunting them. Strange as it may seem, the word gecko itself takes its name from a Malay word imitative of the lizard’s call. U.S. prisoners in the Japanese Cabanatum P.O.W. camp in the Philippines during World War II also heard the gecko’s peculiar cry. Wrote Hampton Sides in Ghost Soldiers (2001): “Geckos were draped all about the barracks, sated from the night’s mos- quitoes, occasionally calling out in their distinctive two-note chirp that prisoners swore sounded like “Fuck you! Fuck you!” A small annoyance next to all the horrors they experienced but just what the fickle finger of fate had done.
