Holden Caulfield. The fictional character created by J. D. Salinger in The Catcher in the Rye (1951) was named in an unu- sual way. The author happened to be passing a movie theater and looked up at the marquee to see the names William Holden and Joan Caulfield starring in Dear Ruth. He focused on the last names, which were featured in large letters, and the two names seemed a natural for the name of the teenager in the book he was writing. |
