stiff-necked. Obstinate, stubborn. The allusion here is to a horse that refuses to respond to the reins. The expression is re- corded in the Bible (Jer. 17:23): “They obeyed not, but made their necks stiff.” This refers to Jerusalemites dishonoring the Sabbath, but, according to Professor Howard Marblestone, “The better-known use appears in Exodus 32:9 (and other plac- es) when God condemns the Israelites for being ‘a stiff-necked people’ of little faith, who followed Aaron in making the golden calf.” |
