Stepin Fetchit. American vaudevillian Lincoln Theodore Monroe Andrew Perry took his stage name, Stepin Fetchit, from a racehorse he had won money on, hoping that the nag’s name would continue bringing him good luck. It didn’t, in the long run. Stepin Fetchit instead became the synonym for a ser- vile, silly black man when Hollywood typecast the talented ac- tor in such roles throughout the 1940s. By the time of the civil rights movement, the actor was completely out of favor and out of work. |
