词汇 | st ignatius-s bean |
词源 | St. Ignatius’s bean. The seed or bean of the woody vine Strychnos ignatti yields the deadly poison strychnine, which does have curative medical properties as well. All that is known about the bean’s namesake is that he is one of seven saints named Ignatius, perhaps the Portuguese-born Jesuit Azevedo (1528–70), who may have come upon the plant in his travels. Strychnine itself is an old Greek name for a kind of nightshade, applied by Linnaeus to the 220 species of this genus because so many of them are poisonous. In the United States only one poi- sonous Strychnos species is found, the Strychnos nux-vomica or “strychnine tree” of extreme southern Florida, whose seeds yielded poisons for the arrows of Indians native to the area. A large strychnine tree specimen grows in New York’s Brooklyn Botanic Garden. |
