The name, though not the form, was invented in the U.S., its first mention in Harper’s Magazine in 1887 in the form of “short story writing.” A short story, briefly, is usually a prose work of fiction under 10,000 words, “differing from a novel in being shorter and less elaborate,” according to the O.E.D. A short short story is even more condensed, perhaps of up to 1,200 words. Edgar Allan Poe is regarded as the origina- tor of the modern short story, which Americans have excelled in. An old joke has an English teacher telling a class that the five requisites to a good short story are “brevity, a religious ref- erence, a sexual reference, some association with society and an illustration of modesty.” The next day a student handed in a story that read in full: “My God!” said the duchess. ‘Take your hand off my knee!’ ” |
