shoot the cat; shoot one’s cookies; shoot the moon; shoot one’s cuffs. Shoot the cat is British slang meaning “to vomit, throw up, be sick to one’s stomach.” The expression, similar to the American shoot (or toss) one’s cookies, has been traced to the early 19th century, but the use of cat has never been satis- factorily explained. Shoot the moon means “to move out of a residence at night without paying the rent,” while shoot the crow means “to suddenly leave a place (skip town, as Ameri- cans say), and shoot one’s cuffs means “to display a large amount of shirt cuff when wearing a jacket.” |
