rat pack. The term rat pack, referring to humans, was first applied to singer Frank Sinatra (1915–98) and his close friends (Dean Martin, Peter Lawford, Sammy Davis, Jr., etc.) by Republicans angry at Sinatra for the help he gave John F. Kennedy in the 1960 presidential campaign. Later, angry at Kennedy, Sinatra supported Nixon, Reagan, and the Republi- cans. Sinatra (“Chairman of the Board,” “The Voice,” “Frankie Boy,” “Old Blue Eyes”) was a legend in his own time. The sing- er won an Oscar for his portrayal of Maggio in From Here to Eternity. Sinatra himself called the rat pack his “pallies.” See pack rat. |
