rapeseed. The name of seed of rape (Brassica napus) of the mustard family derives from the Latin rapum for “turnip.” It is used to make rape oil, a brownish yellow oil used chiefly as a lubricant and illuminant, and in the manufacture of rubber substitutes. In 1981 more than 600 Spaniards died in the largest recorded accidental mass poisoning in history from using a commercial cooking oil made with “denatured” industrial oil from rapeseed. Rape is used as a cover crop in the United States. See mustard. |
