词汇 | higgins boat |
词源 | Higgins boat. A naval landing craft greatly responsible for the success of D-Day, the invasion of Nazi-occupied France during World War II. Officially, it was designated the LCVP (landing craft, vehicle, and personnel). Its popular name hon- ors its inventor and manufacturer Andrew Higgins, described by General Eisenhower as “the man who won the war for us.” More Americans were carried ashore in Higgins boats during World War II than in all other landing crafts combined. |
