Beaver State. A nickname for Oregon. It has also been called the Sunset State and the Webfoot State, suggested by the term Webfooters for residents of the state, which has a 77.2-inch an- nual rainfall, good weather for (webfooted) ducks. Oregon was once known as the Hard-Case State, this unusual state nick- name referring to the many shady characters who came there in the early 19th century. |
