beauty is only skin-deep. Skin-deep, for “superficial” or “shallow,” “penetrating no deeper than the skin,” can be traced back to the early 17th century, as can the proverbial beauty is only skin-deep, expressing the limitations of beauty. The last ex- pression is first recorded in a poem by Thomas Overbury in about 1613: “All the carnall beauty of my wife,/Is but skin- deep.” Skin-deep, literally, can range from 1/10th of an inch on the eyelid to 1⁄5th of an inch on the back. |
