The Amazing Regurgitator. Hadji Ali, billed as “The Amaz- ing Regurgitator” in the late 19th century, had one of the most tasteless acts in vaudeville history. Ali would swallow a variety of things, including objects supplied by his audiences, and re- gurgitate them at will. But it must be said that upchucking coins, jewels, watches, watermelon seeds, peach pits, and the like wasn’t the exciting part of his act. For a grand finale Hadji swal- lowed a gallon of water and a pint of kerosene. He’d first throw up the kerosene, spewing it five feet across the stage, where it set a small heated metal castle on fire. He then vomited the gallon of water to extinguish the flaming castle while the audience cheered. There are records of his performance on film.
