词汇 mount everest
词源
Mount Everest. The highest mountain in the world (29,028 feet), in the central Himalaya mountains on the border of Tibet and Nepal, takes its name from Sir George Everest (1790–1866), the British surveyor-general of India from 1830–43. Sir George never reached the top of the mountain, however. Not until 1953 did climber Edmund Hillary (later knighted for his ac- complishment) and the Sherpa guide Tenzing Norgay become the first men to reach the summit.
