词源 | that’s a good one. That’s a great joke or story, although it can also mean “that’s quite a lie.” It is in the first sense that the ex- pression was first recorded, in William Wycherley’s The Coun- try Wife (1672). There Alithea tells Sparkish he ought to hate his rival for courting her. “That’s a good one!” Sparkish says. “I hate a man for loving you! If he did love you, ‘tis but what he can’t help; and ‘tis your fault, not his, if he admires you.” |
