词汇 | tell him her where to get off |
词源 | tell him (her) where to get off. Apparently a trolley-car con- ductor or the like has nothing to do with this expression mean- ing “to admonish someone for his or her audacity or arrogance.” The phrase was first recorded by American author George Ade, often noted for his use of vernacular, in his More Fables in Slang (1879): “He said he was a gentleman and that no cheap skate in a plug hat could tell him where to get off.” The expression may come from the old expression to get up on one’s high horse. What is implied is “from what high horse does he think he can give me orders from; I’ll tell him where to get off it.” The phrase is also heard as show him (her) where to get off. See high horse. |
