The famous “When the Hurley- burley’s done, When the Battaile’s lost, and wonne,” of Macbeth’s witches seems to support the old story that hurly-burly, an up- roar or noisy disturbance, derives from the excitement of burly men hurling spears in battle. But no proof of this exists. Neither does hurly-burly appear to have derived from hullabaloo, the Irish word for wailing at funerals, which now means any loud noise or uproar.
