According to Sir Thomas Browne, callipygian re- fers to “women largely composed from behind.” This is a term of admiration (unlike steatopygous ), deriving from the Greek roots for “beauty” and “buttocks.” The Callipygian Venus is a famous classical statue of Venus with substantial, nicely shaped buttocks.
