World Series. This term is, of course, still used in baseball and has been extended to cover any highest-level contest, from the world series of poker to the world series of go-cart racing. The first World Series in baseball called the World Series was held in 1889, the term a shortening of the World Champion- ship Series. This was a series of post-season games held each year between the pennant winners of the National League and the American Association beginning in 1884. But the first World Series between two major league teams came in 1903, when the American League was recognized as a bona fide ma- jor league. The American League’s Boston Pilgrims (later the Boston Red Sox) beat the National League’s Pittsburgh Pirates in this best-of-nine game series, which fans paid one dollar a game to see.
