work into a lather. When we tell someone “Don’t work your- self into a lather” over something, we mean don’t get hot and bothered, don’t get angry or worried. Lather derives from the Anglo-Saxon word for washing soda or foam and has long been used to describe the flecks of foam on a heavily perspiring horse. From the notion of a horse worked into a hot and both- ered state came our expression, probably in the mid-19th century. |
