cacao tree. The drink called “cocoa” is made from the cocoa beans of the South American cacao tree, cocoa being simply a variant spelling of cacao. Chocolate is also made from the beans, taking its name from the Nahuatl (Aztec) word xocoatl, “food made from the cacao.” For many years the cacao tree was confused with the coco tree because a printing error in Samuel Johnson’s great dictionary (1755) listed the two trees together under the cocoa entry.
