词汇 | bilingual |
词源 | bilingual. To be bilingual is to be able to speak two languages with facility. The word comes from the Latin lingua, tongue, and bi-, two, and is first recorded in about 1835. The impor- tance of bilingualism is illustrated by the old South American tale of the cat, mouse, and dog who live in the same house. The cat and the mouse were mortal enemies, of course, but the dog and mouse lived on good terms. So when the mouse heard barking one day, he came out of his hole to greet his canine friend. He was quickly caught by the cat. “You’re not supposed to bark!” were the rodent’s last words. Replied the cat, licking her chops: “To get along in this life, it is necessary to know more than one language.” |
