bikini. Soon after the two 1946 atomic bomb tests at Bikini Atoll in the Pacific, a French couturier created “L’atome—the world’s smallest bathing suit.” This was supposed to compare “the effects wrought by a scantily clad woman to the effects of an atomic bomb,” as Webster’s put it. However, French designer Louis Réard outdid L’atome with his Bikini, named after the at- oll and “smaller than the smallest bathing suit in the world.” Bi- kini caught on, L’atome did not. Since then we have had the string and the thong, even briefer than the bikini, so brief that an American slang synonym for it is butt floss.
