heavy hitter. A batter who consistently hits the ball hard, a power hitter, has been called a heavy hitter in baseball since at least the first recording of the term in 1887. By extension the term has come to apply to anyone powerful in any profession or undertaking, giving us political heavy hitters, literary heavy hitters, etc. |
